Chicks that Rock: the Art Edition

Have you ever wondered where all the good female artists are? I always find interesting to observe that actually all of the media’s attention is, or more accurately, was placed on male artists. Think about it. Do you often see newspaper stories or magazine articles about women’s art? Think again. Is it as common to see a published story about some male artist as it is about a female artist? I don’t think so, which is why I decided to write about successful, yet not mainstream, female artists that have a vision and are willing to share it with everybody. From paintings, drawings and sculptures in the next paragraphs we’ll see why these chicks rock.

C. Finley is a young innovative artist. Finley talks about taking pretty much anything: she is a journalism professional, a painter, a drawer and recently she became a sculpturer. For me she is the perfect example of inspiring responsible artist since she launched an art campaign that involved the embellishment of trash dumpsters. Once she declared that “If we see dumpsters as works of art, we have raised consciousness." I couldn’t agree more with that simple thought, besides we gotta recognize that it’s a neat idea.

Vanessa Prager is a young artist with no formal education that has been officially on the circuit since year 2003. Last year, she participated in several art exhibitions in the United States in places like Bathhouse Studios NY, Upper Playground Los Angeles and Ghettogloss Gallery. Although I personally like her paintings I don’t see them as edgier and attracting as her drawings. Also, what I like the most about her drawings are her traces and the background she gives her characters.

Cassandra Rhodin comes from a family of artists and all that sensibility must have gotten into her genes because she is a very good artist. Although modesty isn’t one of her features, we gotta give her props for the sophistication of her characters and her ability to gather a top model look alike with a chimp. Can’t wait to see what this promising artist may come up with next.
